The Academy offers specialized learning environments and innovative instructional programs that offer opportunities for at-risk students as well as students who prefer a smaller, more structured learning environment. Attendance at The Academy does not disqualify students from participating in University Interscholastic League (UIL) activities (such as band, choir, FFA, and more) at La Porte High School.
The DAEP (District Alternative Education Program) formerly housed at the Viola DeWalt campus has been moved to other locations to enable more students to take advantage of the programs offered at The Academy. Students may participate in a wide variety of endorsement pathways and college credit programs.
Candace Pohl, current principal at La Porte Junior High School, will serve as the principal at The Academy beginning with the 2018-19 school year.
To enroll in The Academy, students must first complete the application process and speak with the principal or their counselor. Upon acceptance, students and their parents must sign the student/parent compact. An orientation for students and parents will be held on Aug. 13, with freshmen starting school on Aug. 14 and all other grades on Aug. 15.
